01 / Travel
Getting from MBD
Moradabad has good bus/train connections to Chandigarh (for Shimla) and Pathankot (for Dharamshala). Overnight Volvo buses are cheapest and comfortable. No flights needed for any trip.
02 / Stay
Zostel strategy
Zostels in Manali, Kaza, Dharamshala, and Bir are social goldmines — you'll find trek partners, drivers, and lifelong friends. Book 2–3 weeks ahead in peak season (June, September).
03 / Money
Cash in remote areas
Spiti, Lahaul, and Kinnaur have almost no ATMs. Carry enough cash from Shimla or Manali. UPI works in some shops in Kaza but don't rely on it.
04 / Health
Altitude precautions
For Spiti and Lahaul — spend 1 full day at Kaza or Keylong before trekking. Carry Diamox. Headache, nausea, and fatigue are normal at 3800m+. Descend immediately if it worsens.
05 / Permits
What needs permits
Rohtang Pass requires a permit (book online, free). Chitkul needs Inner Line Permit (ILP) for foreigners. GHNP trekking needs advance permit from Shamshi office. Kinner Kailash parikrama requires permit.
06 / Seasons
When to go where
Shimla/Manali: March–June & September–November. Spiti/Lahaul: June–October only. Dharamshala/Tirthan: year-round, best Oct–March. Kinnaur: May–October. Never go to Spiti in monsoon.
